Keeping the Spark Alive: Burn-out, Grief, and Spirituality in our Professional and our Personal Live

May 01, 2015 09:00am -
May 01, 2015 04:30pm

Event Description

Master Series in Clinical Practice

Jointly sponsored by The Continuing Education Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Major Teaching Hospital of Harvard Medical School; Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute; and the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology.

The Master Series affords the chance to spend a complete day with leaders in our field to consider the unique perspective each speaker brings to the challenging dilemmas in both theory and practice. We hope that you will consider joining us for the entire series at a reduced tuition or choose the programs most relevant to your own practice.

David Treadway, PhD, instructor

As clinicians we share many of the same grief, losses, and struggles as our clients. We’ve all faced those times of stress and insecurity when our work is frustrating and unrewarding and we are struggling in our own lives. The fundamental cause of burn-out is when the combination of our grief and our powerlessness in response to the lives of our clients and our own lives shuts us down emotionally and spiritually. Whether “burn-out” manifests as numbness and disconnection or difficult counter transference professionally or increased problematic reactivity in our personal lives, every clinician is vulnerable to going through periods of losing the spark of connection and joy in our calling. This workshop will address burn-out prevention in both our professional and personal lives.

We will discuss the nature of therapy and the life of being a therapist and we will address the positive and negative impact for many of us growing up as care givers in our family of origin and being dependent on our identity as caregivers in our immediate families, friendships, and work. Participants will learn new strategies such as the “directed letter writing”, “the soft-boiled egg meditation,” and the “you’re not it” mantra for addressing the sometimes overwhelming grief and helplessness in our work and in our lives.

We will explore our own spiritual and healing journeys in relationship to both our work and our personal experience and do the “Small step to big changes” personal assessment exercise that will allow us to identify three changes in our lives that we can implement immediately that will help us maintain a balanced and satisfying life both in the office and at home.

Learning Objectives:

    • Assess the symptoms of burnout both in their clinical and private lives.
    • Discuss a variety of strategies to prevent burn-out and to effectively treat it.
    • Describe a wide variety of new strategies and techniques to work with the underlying grief and spiritual challenges inherent in being a clinician
