Event Description Deborah Weinstock-Savoy, PhD, instructor
Change is inevitable - and major life change can be stressful for children. This workshop will focus on supporting young children (2 to 8 years) who face significant life transitions, such as starting/changing school programs, moving to a different home/community or adjusting to a new family situation. We will discuss children's common reactions to life transitions, and what professionals can do to help them learn to cope most effectively. We will also explore how adults deal with transitions and can learn to become better role models for managing changes in positive ways.
Participants will be able to identify:
1. Common life transitions for young children;
2. Major reasons that transitions can be stressful for young children;
3. Individual, developmental, and family factors that put some children at higher risk for difficulty with transitions;
4. A range of strategies that help children cope with transitions;
5. Examples of ways that adults can help children develop these positive coping strategies;
6. Examples of ways that adults can be positive role models for children in coping with transitions.
