Psychodynamic Diagnosis and Treatment of Personality Disorders
with Nancy McWilliams, PhD
Thursday, March 23, 2017 | 8:45 am - 5:00 pm
at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel, Boston, MA
Psychodynamic therapists wanting to broaden and deepen their clinical skills will have an opportunity to develop proficiency in the use of a new, enhanced classification system for mental health disorders, one that will be explored in detail over the course of the day (Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (PDM-2). This state-of-the-art paradigm focuses not simply on symptom clusters and maladaptive behaviors as defining “diagnostic categories” but rather on overall mental functioning, interpersonal competencies, emotional intelligence, coping strategies, and self-reflective capacity as defining more nuanced “personality patterns,” the understanding of which will then enable clinicians to formulate more individualized treatment plans for their patients. More specifically, instead of a diagnostic system that makes clinical distinctions on the basis of superficial, isolated, and observable “traits,” the holistic diagnostic system elaborated upon here –and offered as a complement to the aforementioned system – represents a more in-depth and whole-person approach to mental health issues, etiological factors, underlying psychodynamics, and relational patterns. With an emphasis always on the interface between theory and practice, clinical material will be presented throughout the day that demonstrates the efficacy of a therapeutic approach informed by a conceptualization of the patient as a complex, multidimensional, unique individual with both “surface” and “depth.”
Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this Pre-Conference institute, participants will be able to:
-
Elaborate upon the inherent limitations of a diagnostic system that focuses primarily on symptom clusters and observable behaviors;
-
Describe the benefits of supplementing such a system with a more holistic perspective that conceives of the patient as a unique, multifaceted individual with complex personality patterns; and
-
Provide a few clinical examples that demonstrate the advantageous application of this broader-based and more personalized approach to psychodynamic work with patients.
