Understanding the Mental Health Needs of Haitian Immigrants:
Culturally-Sensitive Strategies for Health Care Providers

Haitians take great pride in their culture, the closeness of their family units, and the natural support networks that exist within their community to help them cope with adversities and everyday life stressors. While historically Haitians have been hesitant to seek mental health services, in recent years many Haitian immigrants have begun to turn to their primary care providers and mental health professionals in search of symptom relief and management of mental illnesses. This workshop will assist providers in understanding the roles of family values, cultural concepts of health and illness, and spiritual beliefs and practices in the help-seeking behaviors of Haitian immigrants. Moreover, the workshop will offer practical recommendations and culturally-sensitive strategies that providers can utilize to effectively engage and retain Haitian clients in care. The workshop aims to increase the knowledge and skills of health care professionals to provide culturally-competent services to Haitian immigrants in the U.S.
Learning objectives:
Identify sources of support to Haitian adults and families.
Understand barriers to Haitian immigrants engaging in mental health counseling.
List strategies that are effective in providing culturally-competent mental health care to Haitian Immigrants.

Location: William James College, Newton
Marie Pierre-Victor, LICSW, received her MSW degrees from Boston College. She is the Clinical Director of Behavioral Health at Codman Square Health Center. Her training includes certification in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing levels I and II (EMDR), Tapas Acupressure Technique, Advanced Certification in the Treatment of Psychological Trauma, and a certificate in Cognitive Behavior Therapy. She works mostly with individuals diagnosed with complex PTSD, anxiety disorders, dissociative disorders, and mood disorders. Ms. Pierre-Victor has a private practice in Canton and is an active member of the Haitian Mental Health Network.
