Much has changed and much has not, since Dr. Treadway first began giving this workshop on family treatment of substance abuse. The very nature of how we consider addictions has evolved significantly as we now understand the process addictions, of sex, eating disorders, spending, shopping, etc. We also now appreciate the consistency of virtually almost all folks with an addiction also suffering from an additional diagnosable mental disorders like manic-depressive, anxiety, depression and PTSD. We also now recognize the rising epidemic of medically prescribed opioids and other drugs which are being dangerously abused. Dr Treadway will be presenting a workshop that updates our understanding of addiction and how best to utilize a family therapy model with which to treat it. He will discuss and present cases on working with couples, doing Interventions, working with families with abusing children and working with families in which the child is the presenting problem while one of the parents is hiding a substance abuse problem. He will also present on working with adult survivors of abusive and neglectful parents. He will also review his learnings, regrets, failures and successes of his own experience working with this challenging population for 45 years.

Specific learning objectives:

• Describe updates to our understanding of addiction and how best to utilize a family therapy model with which to treat it.

• Discuss and present cases on working with couples, doing Interventions, working with families with abusing children and working with families in which the child is the presenting problem while one of the parents is hiding a substance abuse problem

David Treadway, PhD, is a nationally known therapist and author who has been giving workshops and trainings around the country for the past forty years. He is the author of Before It's Too Late: Working with Substance Abuse in the Family, Norton, 1989 and still selling well today.  He is the author of three other books and over thirty articles and is a 2002 Psychotherapy Networker award winner for an article selected as one of the best ten pieces in their 25 year history. Dr Treadway has appeared on Good Morning America, 20/20 and other television shows as well as hosting his own radio program on family communications.
