Changing Practice:

Bringing Interventions that Work to Children and Families in the Community

Presentation by ROBERT P. FRANKS, PhD, President & CEO, JUDGE BAKER CHILDREN’S CTR.

In this presentation, Dr. Franks will discuss the challenges of bridging the gap between research and practice in children’s mental health through the implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs) in community-based settings.  He will review some of the challenges and barriers of implementing EBPs in the real world and proven strategies for overcoming these obstacles.  He will draw on his experience over the past ten years of implementing and supporting evidence-based treatments within a statewide system of care.  Further, he will introduce the basic constructs of implementation science and provide examples of successful implementation of evidence-based treatments in children’s mental health.

Robert Franks, PhD, has a broad background in child and adolescent psychology, with specific training and expertise in early childhood, trauma-informed, school and community-based interventions. He has held faculty positions at the Yale Child Study Center, University of Connecticut and Harvard Medical School. He has worked in key leadership roles in several major federally funded and state level initiatives. His work has focused on the wide scale dissemination and implementation of a range of evidence-based practices for children and adolescents, focusing on bringing programs to scale and creating the necessary structures to ensure high quality, fidelity and sustainability of services. In his current role at Judge Baker, Dr. Franks oversees a multitude of programs including direct service, policy work, implementation, dissemination, training and research. Judge Baker’s primary mission is to improve the quality of mental healthcare by working at the policy, systems and practice levels.
