Integration of Medical and Behavioral Health Services:

Attitudes, Skills and Knowledge

Saturday, March 25, 2017 from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm at William James College

Bruce Ecker, PhD, Program Coordinator

Bill Gunn, PhD, Alan Lorenz, MD and Nancy Ruddy, PhD, instructors

The primary purpose of this workshop is to develop in both students and faculty the skills, attitudes and knowledge unique to this new “specialty” of integrated care. The skills necessary to work at a population level are different than specialty mental health settings, and the attitudes necessary to promote and participate in true team based care are unique.  Faculty and students have different but interdependent goals and the day will be structured to promote growth for both groups. The morning will begin with a self-assessment of competency and identification of learning needs.  Specific content areas will address clients across the life span -- in children (behavioral problems, ADHD), adults (chronic medical illness, MUS) and geriatrics (capacity assessment, depression). Each topic will be presented in the following format:  1. Brief content presentation and discussion of relevant skills 2. Demonstration role play.  3.  Break into separate groups for role play practice.  4. Large group discussion. These experiential sessions will be followed by a presentation and discussion of the common ethical dilemmas encountered in integrated care.  Faculty and students will discuss their experience in relation to these dilemmas.  Breakout sessions will be used again to practice skills necessary to address these issues in practice.  The day will end with a final large group discussion of take home messages.

Specific learning objectives:

  • Describe the competencies necessary in the role of the behavioral health consultant as well as their own developmental learning needs towards learning/teaching those competencies.
  • Describe relevant brief interventions in pediatric, adult and older adult problems from a family-oriented perspective.
  • Describe the ethical challenges unique to integrated care and ways to address these challenges successfully.

Bill Gunn PhD, is a faculty member of the NH/Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency in Concord, NH and holds a clinical appointment at Dartmouth Medical School.  He is a former board member of the Collaborative Family Healthcare Association.  Bill is a co-author of Models of Collaboration (2006) and The Collaborative Psychotherapist (2009). He coordinates with Julie Schirmer, LCSW an integrated care “learning community” in New England which meets regularly.  He is membership co-chair of CFHA, and chair with Barbara Ward-Zimmerman, PhD of the Division 38 primary care subcommittee.  He also has a particular interest in working with patients having unexplained symptoms and those wanting to make lifestyle changes such as weight management and smoking cessation.

Alan Lorenz, MD, was born in Madison, Wisconsin, migrated west for college at Stanford, and then began collaborative work at the nearby Palo Alto VA Hospital. After doing graduate work in psychology, he returned to Madison for Medical School, and then moved on to Rochester, New York for residency in Family Medicine, a fellowship in Family Systems, and training as a Family Therapist. Dr. Lorenz taught in a residency program for ten years, seeing medical patients and teaching psychosocial core and family practicum. He currently works in the University Health Service at the University of Rochester. He is the author of dozens of articles, book chapters, and presentations to local, national and international audiences.

Nancy Ruddy, PhD, received her degree in clinical psychology from Bowling Green State University in 1991.  She spent the first 22 years of her career in medical education, first at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry from 1991-2000.  After relocating to New Jersey in 2000, she taught at Hunterdon Family Practice Residency from 2001-2008, and at Mountainside Family Practice from 2008-2013.  Throughout her academic career she focused on training medical and mental health professionals to integrate behavioral health care into primary care settings.  After a brief detour into large scale health care communications and marketing aimed at enhancing patient engagement, health behaviors and medication adherence, she now consults with academic institutions and health care systems to prepare professionals to provide team based care and integrated behavioral health in primary care.  She was the author of the 2008 APA Books publication The Collaborative Psychotherapist.  She was awarded the Health Psychology (Division 38) Timothy B. Jeffrey Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Health Psychology in 2013 and named a Fellow of the Division of Health Psychology in 2014.
