Neurofeedback Training in the Treatment of Pain

Edward Jacobs, Ph.D., instructor

Neurofeedback is biofeedback of the central nervous system through operant conditioning of the EEG. It is used to improve the regulation of the central nervous system by training the brain to alter its electrical activity in or between selected sites on the cortex. This program will present the research in using this treatment modality to treat chronic pain conditions. The program will introduce the attendees to the experimental, theoretical and clinical background of neurofeedback and focus on its particular application to pain. The program will include lecture and computer demonstration of software.

Upon completion of the program the student will be able to:

  • Identify the theoretical and experimental basis of neurofeedback
  • Describe the procedures involved in providing neurofeedback training
  • Understand the research in treating chronic pain conditions with neurofeedback

Edward H. Jacobs, Ph.D., is a psychologist in private practice in Londonderry, NH. He is the author of Fathering the ADHD Child: A Book for Fathers, Mothers and Professionals and ADHD: Helping Parents Help Their Children, and several papers and articles on family therapy, self psychology, parenting, ADHD, learning disabilities and neurofeedback. He is on the faculty of EEG Spectrum International, an organization that develops hardware and software and provides professional training in the field of neurofeedback. He provides psychotherapy, psychological testing, neurofeedback and special education consultation to children, adolescents, adults and families.
