This program explores the “social brain hypothesis” – the idea that our brains are exquisitely developed to make sense of, and adapt to, the social world in which we live. We will review the brain structures, processes, and dynamics that create our social brain. Mirror neurons, face reading, affect awareness, and mutual regulation will be examined. We will look into the right brain, non-conscious emotion driven process that attunes us, and the left brain processes --including cognitive control and language -- that enable us to use narrative to make meaning. The value of this perspective for self knowledge and work with people in a variety of settings will be discussed and explored. How to integrate this perspective into psychotherapeutic work will also be talked about. The program draws on the writings of Daniel Siegel, Alan Schore, Anthony Damasio, Lisa Barrett, and others. There will be a mixture of slide base lecture, interactive and self directed experiential parts, and group dialogue.

Upon completion of the program the student will be able to:

• Recognize the basic brain processes the underline emotional intelligence
• Understand brain dynamics represented by top-down and bottom up, brain braking, and right-left integration.
• Utilize ‘mindsight’ and other reflective strategies to regulate affect and gain perspective on self-other interaction.
• Understand the role the affect plays in cognition.

Steven Krugman, Ph.D., is a psychologist in private practice in Newton and Boston. In addition, he has directed the training program at the Trauma Center, been on the faculty of the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies and presented continuing education programs through the Harvard CME program and at MSPP. Over the last number of years he has taught courses and programs on attachment, mentalization and the social brain.
