Complementary & Integrative Medicine in the Management of Mental Health Issues

May 09, 2015 09:00am -
May 09, 2015 04:30pm

Event Description

Master Series in Clinical Practice

Jointly sponsored by The Continuing Education Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Major Teaching Hospital of Harvard Medical School; Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute; and the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology.

The Master Series affords the chance to spend a complete day with leaders in our field to consider the unique perspective each speaker brings to the challenging dilemmas in both theory and practice. We hope that you will consider joining us for the entire series at a reduced tuition or choose the programs most relevant to your own practice.

Donald B. Levy, MD, instructor

This evidence-based workshop will explore the rational use of dietary supplements and botanicals in the treatment of anxiety, depression and insomnia. Common features of mindfulness-based training techniques including the role of neuroplasticity and the development of resilience will be discussed. Distinguishing between pain and suffering will be emphasized. The subtleties of referring a medical patient for psychological or mind-body therapy (“I am not saying it is all in your head”) will be addressed as well as understanding the meaning of forgiveness and its role in mental and physical health. The importance of asking about spiritual beliefs and practices in the clinical encounter will be highlighted. Lastly, this workshop will underscore the place of hope in the age of evidence-based health care and ‘Energy Medicine’—is there a scientific basis?
