Jointly sponsored by The Continuing Education Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Major Teaching Hospital of Harvard Medical School; Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute; and William James College.

The Master Series affords the chance to spend a complete day with leaders in our field to consider the unique perspective each speaker brings to the challenging dilemmas in both theory and practice. We hope that you will consider joining us for the entire series at a reduced tuition or choose the programs most relevant to your own practice.

Judith Lewis Herman MD, Phillip Brown, LICSW, Lois Glass, LICSW, Barbara Hamm, PsyD and Emily Schatzow, MEd, instructors

Group therapy offers an antidote to the shame and isolation that commonly afflict trauma survivors (Mendelsohn, et. al, 2007). Group Therapy has acquired a strong evidence-base as an effective treatment for patients with histories of trauma (Shea, et. al, 2009), but in practice group therapy tends to be underutilized, because many practitioners find the challenges of trauma groups daunting.  This workshop will offer practitioners skills for organizing successful groups.  The course instructor will be joined by colleagues from the Victims of Violence Program at Cambridge Health Alliance who have developed and taught trauma group models for many years. We will begin with a review of the concept of recovery stages and the consensus guidelines for staged treatment of complex trauma developed by the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (Cloitre et al, 2011).  We will continue with an overview of the common features of all trauma groups. We will then distinguish the characteristic features of groups designed for patients at different stages of recovery, and present several specific group models with role-play demonstrations. Finally, we will discuss how these models have been adapted for different patient populations, and workshop participants will be encouraged to consider how to adapt these models for the diverse populations they serve.

Specific learning objectives:

1) Identify the common features of groups for trauma survivors;

2) Identify the distinguishing features of groups for each of three stages of recovery;

3) Identify which group model would be most useful for adaptation to the populations he or she serves.
