Event Description Master Series in Clinical Practice
Jointly sponsored by The Continuing Education Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Major Teaching Hospital of Harvard Medical School; Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute; and the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology.
The Master Series affords the chance to spend a complete day with leaders in our field to consider the unique perspective each speaker brings to the challenging dilemmas in both theory and practice. We hope that you will consider joining us for the entire series at a reduced tuition or choose the programs most relevant to your own practice.
Ronald Siegel, Psy.D., instructor
Mindfulness-based psychotherapy is the most popular new treatment approach in the last decade—and for good reason. Mental health professionals are enthusiastically discovering that mindfulness practices hold great promise not only for their own personal development, but also as remarkably powerful tools to augment virtually every form of psychotherapy.
Mindfulness is not, however, a one-size-fits-all remedy. Practices need to be tailored to fit the needs of particular individuals. After learning the components of mindfulness practices and how they work to alleviate psychological distress, participants will learn how to creatively adapt them to meet the needs of diverse people and conditions. They’ll learn which practices are best suited to more vulnerable or fragile individuals, which are most effective for people with greater internal resources, and how to adapt practices to meet the cultural needs of diverse groups.
Mindfulness techniques will be presented to help resolve anxiety, depression, stress-related medical disorders, and even interpersonal conflicts. Through lecture, experiential exercises, case examples, scientific research, and Q & A, participants will gain practical knowledge and skills that can enhance virtually any form of psychotherapy.
Information presented will be identified as based upon empirical studies or the accumulating clinical experience of mindfulness-oriented clinicians as appropriate. Risks and contraindications associated with particular practices will be emphasized.
Upon completion of the program, the student will be able to:
· Describe the three core elements of mindfulness practice
· Identify common denominators in psychological difficulties
· Specify how mindfulness practices can be tailored to the needs of particular types of clients with varied cultural backgrounds and personality organizations.
· Describe the core attitude toward experience found in depression and how mindfulness practice can help to transform it.
· Indicate the mechanisms that maintain anxiety disorders and how these can be altered using mindfulness practice.
· Specify the core dynamic of chronic back pain and other psychophysiological disorders and how mindfulness practice can help in its relief
