Behind Closed Doors: Intimacy, Sexuality and Gender Issues Across The Life Span

Apr 25, 2014 09:00am -

Event Description

Master Series in Clinical Practice

Jointly sponsored by The Continuing Education Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Major Teaching Hospital of Harvard Medical School; Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute; and the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology.

The Master Series affords the chance to spend a complete day with leaders in our field to consider the unique perspective each speaker brings to the challenging dilemmas in both theory and practice. We hope that you will consider joining us for the entire series at a reduced tuition or choose the programs most relevant to your own practice.

David Treadway, Ph.D., instructor

Whether about Viagra or highly publicized marital infidelities, we seem to be talking about sex more than ever before.  And while most people want to be in an intimate, sexually satisfying relationship, sexuality is often not explicitly and successfully addressed in most therapies. However, difficulties in sustaining an intimate compatible sexuality are often at the root of many couples conflicts. This workshop will address the normal problems and possibilities facing virtually all couples (same sex and straight) as they struggle to sustain intimacy and sexuality in their long term relationships. This course is designed for the general therapist regardless of whether they do couples therapy. It will focus on the wide a variety of issues impacting sexuality over the life span of a couple’s relationship. Dr Treadway will present a new model for how to work with couple’s sexual intimacy.

Upon completion of the program, the student will be able to:

  • Assess and treat underlying sexuality issues with their clients.
  • Create a safe and nurturing clinical environment that will allow clients to explore their sexuality
  • Provide a wide variety of effective interventions to help clients with their issues around intimacy and sexuality
  • Assess the impact of their own life experiences on their work with their clients
