NAP Statement of Values

I am committed to my health care profession as my life work, not as a job to be taken up and then set aside at the end of the day. I will abide by professional standards of conduct at all times.

I.              I will place the health needs of my patients ahead of all other professional considerations. I recognize that their well-being, even their lives, may depend on my competence and my commitment.

II.            I pledge to hold all persons in my professional care in fiduciary trust, acting only in their best interests and avoiding all exploitation. I will use my skills to help those in need. I will not use them to cause harm or to support injustice to others.

III.          In all of my work, I will recognize that the individuals whom I help are necessary partners in my efforts. I will respect them as partners and as human beings, incorporating them into the team in all phases of decision making and treatment activities, always treating them with dignity.

IV.          I am a member of my own health care profession and of the broader family of health care professionals, not a lone individual. I will respect all health care providers, treating members of my own profession as though they were extended family and members of other health care professions as though they were members of my own profession.

V.             I recognize that integrated multi-specialty health care, rather than exclusionary practice by any one individual or profession, can best serve the health needs of the public. I support organizational structures and patterns of practice that make such multi-specialty help effectively available.

VI.          I will not enhance my own professional reputation or economic advantage at the expense of my health care colleagues and will not selfishly create divisiveness among our professions.

VII.        I will defer to other practitioners when they can best serve the patients that I serve.

VIII.      I  recognize no “ownership” of patients, because patients own themselves. I will help arrange access to other providers and will work collegially with them toward the overall health and well-being of patients that we mutually serve.

IX.           I support health delivery systems that focus on outcome effectiveness, and oppose those that leverage patient ignorance or irrelevant professional advantages or disadvantages for their own purposes.

X.            I support confidentiality for all personal health information. I support health care delivery systems that foster the sharing of necessary information, the shielding of such information from all others, and the effective tracking and penalizing of all information leaks or unwarranted information monopoly.

XI.           I expect all health care professionals who keep this pledge to be honored by social approval and support, compensated at a level that allows us to live a good life, respected by our patients, by our colleagues, by our communities and by ourselves.
