Establishing LGBTQ-Affirming Social Work Practices: A Culturally-Sensitive Approach
This program is intended to help social workers who do not work primarily with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) clients to better understand how historical influences of power, privilege and culture can impact counseling and other social service efforts delivered to members of this often marginalized and vulnerable community. Participants will gain knowledge of LGBTQ+ historical and political perspectives, the development of LGBTQ identity-formation, health, mental health, workplace and familial concerns, and other issues affecting LGBTQ+ individuals across their life-span, including human sexuality, spirituality, aging, racism, the coming-out process and disenfranchised grief.
Attendees will earn 3.0 Category I Contact Hours, including 3.0 LGBTQ CEs (for DC Social Workers).
