Event Description

Ferrum College's Opioid Symposium: Saving Ourselves

presented by NASWVA in partnership with Ferrum College, School of Social Work

Agenda

1:00 – 3:00pm - Ethical Lapse and Relapse; Michael Hayter LCSW, CSAC, SAP

Social workers in the field of substance usage experience unique ethical challenges and dilemmas. Social workers have a clearly defined Code of Ethics to guide their professional conduct that emphasizes client's right to self-determination, the parameters of confidentiality, the importance of guarding against dual relationships, and the necessity of limiting service to areas of competence. Social workers have been primed to incorporate ethical decision-making in all areas of their professional practice. In spite of this targeted focus, even the most ethically aware social workers have experienced or witnessed lapses in ethical practice.

Am I at risk of a lapse or relapse with my ethical decision making?

3:30 – 5:00pm - Virginia's Behavioral Health System and Opioid Crisis; Stacy Gill LCSW

This presentation will provide an overview Virginia's behavioral health system and the many challenges and changes currently faced by the system.  Management of funding streams, overcrowding of state hospitals, workforce shortages, and the opioid crisis will be presented along with solutions being worked on by the state and local levels in the Commonwealth.

5:00-7:00pm – Dinner on your own

7:00 – 8:00pm – Reading, interview, and audience discussion with Beth Macy, author of “Dopesick”

An instant New York Times and indie bestseller, Dopesick is the only book to fully chart the devastating opioid crisis in America: "a harrowing, deeply compassionate dispatch from the heart of a national emergency" (New York Times) from a bestselling author and journalist who has lived through it

In this masterful work, Beth Macy takes us into the epicenter of America's twenty-plus year struggle with opioid addiction. From distressed small communities in Central Appalachia to wealthy suburbs; from disparate cities to once-idyllic farm towns; it's a heartbreaking trajectory that illustrates how this national crisis has persisted for so long and become so firmly entrenched.
