Session Description:

As the United States faces concurrent mortality crises from COVID-19, mass shootings, overdose, suicide, homicide and maternal mortality, millions of Americans are experiencing the radioactive fallout from bereavement exposure. After being bitten by a radioactive spider herself, Joyal Mulheron took her decades of experience advising high-ranking politicians, both democratic and republican, to become the Spiderman of bereavement in Washington D.C. Joyal founded Evermore, the nation's only nonprofit dedicated to transformative system changes that advances bereavement care for all, which has made substantial progress in advancing bereavement as a social and public health concern among key stakeholders  including Congress, The White House and key federal agencies.

This session will frame bereavement as a social and public health crisis by contextualizing how bereavement impacts American society, including racial minorities and under-resourced populations. Participants will better understand how bereavement care response systems can support functional coping and adaptive processing at the population-level, not only the individual-level. In addition, this session will cover policy developments in the federal space and how those developments can shape a national response. Finally, participants will learn how they can expedite change in their local communities to become Spiderman themselves.
