Event Description

Advocacy Skills for Black Social Workers and the Professionals Who Support Them

Final workshop in NASW Virginia/Metro DC’s Fall Series, “Building the Resiliency of the Next Generation of Social Workers: A Leadership Development Program”

November 18, 1-4:15 p.m. ET, no prerequisite required

This third stand-alone training aims to strengthen the core competency of advocacy for African American social workers and allied professionals who want to support them. Of special emphasis are the moral dilemmas faced by Black social workers and their role in responding to social injustice in the workplace. Topics covered include communication styles, conflict resolution, professional boundaries, and assertive communication.

This workshop is especially important and timely since, according to the Council of Social Work Education, African Americans are the number-one demographic among students obtaining a bachelor’s degree in social work. In addition, African Americans are more likely to experience adverse childhood events and work with high-risk populations, which increases the risk of Black social workers to experience vicarious trauma and burnout.

This workshop series has sought to build the leadership and resiliency skills of African American social workers through reviewing the parallel process of being a trauma-informed provider and professional.

Learning Objectives for the November 18 workshop:

1. Identify and define unhealthy and healthy workplace behaviors.

2. Explain how a trauma-inform approach can be used to promote social justice.

3. Describe proactive upstream strategies for managing toxic behavior.

4. Describe reactive downstream strategies for managing toxic behaviors.

5. Provide examples of ways to protect mental health in the workplace.

6. Provide examples of signs of burn-out and compassion fatigue.
