From Surviving to Thriving: The Key to Post Traumatic Growth

Trauma is a universal concept that every human being endures at some point in their lives. So how do some individuals thrive despite their trauma narratives while others fall in the trap of victimhood? Accurate assessment and treatment planning is key to growth. When exploring a trauma narrative, one should always proceed with caution, especially when exploring Post Traumatic Growth (PTG). It is important not to minimize the impact of the trauma(s) in an effort to promote or understand post traumatic growth (PTG). It is imperative to remember that not all individuals that experience trauma will also experience PTG and it’s important not to imply any failure or minimize the impact of the trauma if PTG does not occur. This workshop will focus on what trauma is and how individuals can grow and thrive despite their trauma narrative. We will explore the 5 areas of growth: personal strength, improved relationships with others, appreciation of life, new life paths & possibilities and spiritual change to various case examples. Different theories will be explored among them, strength-based theories to help consumers build on or acquire resiliency concepts, to help them reshape and reframe the trauma narrative from that of not only surviving but thriving . This is an interactive workshop where cases vignettes will be presented and discussed to enhance the learning experience.

Learning Objectives:  Upon completion of this intermediate course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define and articulate the concept of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Post Traumatic Growth and Toxic Stress.

  3. Understand the overall effects of trauma in relationship to core sense of self and the world.
  4. Participants will be provided with tools like the ACE Questionnaire and Post Traumatic Growth Inventory, to help them understand and meet the needs of individuals with complex trauma.
