A Mind-Body-Spirit Approach to Reducing Implicit Bias

Description:

Despite practitioners' good intentions and commitments to equity, implicit bias can operate to undermine the quality of programs and services and positive client outcomes. Functioning at an unconscious level, implicit biases influence a wide range of practitioner behaviors, including verbal and non-verbal communication and decision making. Everyone has implicit biases. They are robust, pervasive, and run counter to deeply held values and commitments. Practitioners who acknowledge this reality and work to identify and address these biases are empowered to minimize their negative consequences. This workshop will present a whole-self approach (e.g., body, heart/mind, and spirit) to increase practitioners' capacity to interrupt and reduce the effects of implicit bias on their practice. Participants will learn 1) individual-level de-biasing strategies; 2) organizational-level de-biasing strategies; and 3) resources to support their ongoing efforts to reduce implicit bias and its consequences.

Learning Objectives

Following this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the neurological and sociological factors that create and sustain implicit bias
  2. Recognize the effects of implicit bias on practitioner behavior and quality of programs, services, and client outcomes
  3. Use individual-level de-biasing strategies
  4. Advocate for organizational-level de-biasing strategies
  5. Locate resources to support individual-level and organizational-level implicit bias reduction efforts
