This presentation will review the risk factors associated with donor designation of PHS increased risk. In the setting of negative serologies and nucleic acid testing, the presentation will then review the risk of transmission of disease (HIV, HBV and HCV) from PHS increased risk donors with negative serologies. Discussion of the magnitude of these risks v. increased risk of death on the waitlist will then follow.
Objectives:
- Understand risk factors associated with PHS increased risk designation
- Become conversant in the magnitude of risk of viral transmission from PHS increased risk donors
- Understand the 'eclipse period' and how it relates to antibody and nucleic acid testing in PHS increased risk donors
- Become comfortable with communication of risks of rare events
