American Council of Chief Defenders:
June 24-26, Cincinnati, OH
"Rising up and Connecting to Balance the Scales and Protect America’s Right to Counsel"
Please join us for an exciting 2012 ACCD Summer Conference. On the eve of the 50th Anniversary of the landmark decision in Gideon vs. Wainwright, indigent defense has reached a critical moment: Public defender systems continue to struggle as funding diminishes, impacting the ability to effectively deliver quality representation to clients as well as properly train staff providing that representation; staff attorneys face overwhelming caseloads; recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions in Padilla v. Kentucky and Graham v. Florida create new leadership challenges( and opportunities) for chief public defenders; and the need to develop the next generation of defense leaders must become a priority as many chief defenders prepare to transition out of public life.
It is against this backdrop that you are invited to join ACCD for its 2012 Summer Conference. During this program, we shall cover a number of critically important topics, including:
- Keys to Effective Public Policy Advocacy
- Collaborating on Indigent Defense Issues
- Securing Reasonable Caseloads; Ethics and Law in Public Defense
- The Transition of the Chief Defender
- GRAHAM v. FLORIDA: Leadership Challenges for Chief Public Defenders
- PADILLA v. KENTUCKY: Leveraging Padilla for Resources
- Holistic Representation
Additionally, during the ACCD Business Meeting and other networking opportunities, public defense leaders will share information with their colleagues about how they are addressing the critical issues facing their offices and system as well as develop collective strategies to protect and preserve the Sixth Amendment right to counsel.
The American Council of Chief Defenders is a national community of public defense leaders dedicated to securing a fair justice system and ensuring high quality legal representation for people facing loss of life, freedom or family.
The Mission of the American Council of Chief Defenders is to provide tools, strategies, mutual support, training and information to chief defenders; to speak as a national voice for public defense; to promote best practices in the leadership, management, and administration of justice; and to support development and reform of public defense systems.
ACCD members must belong to NLADA in order to be a member of the Section. ACCD Section membership is open to all chiefs and deputy chiefs (i.e., first two in command hierarchy regardless of title) of all types of indigent defense systems in the United States and its territories, including the heads of county or judicial district offices within state systems. Prosecutors and Bench Officers are not eligible for membership.
