Apr 04, 2012 10:00am - Apr 04, 2012 04:00pm
Event Type: Workshop

Description

As the market for organic produce continues to expand, so do opportunities for farmers interested in transitioning to organic production. NOFA-NY, NYSDAM, and USDA Risk Management Agency are pleased to invite farmers who are considering making the transition to organic production to join Klaas Martens (Lakeview Organic Grain), Brian Baker (The Organic Center), Abby Seaman (Cornell University, Integrated Pest Management Program), and Brian Caldwell (Cornell University, Weed Ecology and Management) for a Transitioning to Organic Production workshop. Klaas, Brian, Abby, and Brian will present the basic principles of organic agriculture, cover organic farming practices, and discuss the growing market for locally-produced organic products. Attendees will learn about organic soil fertility management, pest and disease management, and successful marketing of organic produce. Farmers that are familiar with Integrated Pest Management practices are especially encouraged to attend; you may be closer to organic than you think!

Attendees will receive a binder with information resources. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
