OPRA Foundation Awards Scholarships to Two Ohio Students

9/15/2015

The Ohio Parks and Recreation Association Foundation has awarded two $1000 scholarships for the 2015-16 academic year to Ohio students planning for careers in parks and recreation.

“These young men represent the future of parks and recreation.  They’re working hard in the classroom and in the field to gain valuable skills and experience,” said OPRA Executive Director Woody Woodward.  ”They will use those skills and experiences for the rest of their careers to have a real impact on the lives of the people who they serve.”

Jody Stowers scholarship winner Paul Rockocy, of North Royalton, is a student at Baldwin Wallace University studying Sport Management.  Paul has served as an intern at the Fairview Park Recreation Department and at the Baldwin Wallace Recreation Department and says that “in order to adapt to the frequently changing economy and demands of society, it is important to stay updated and come up with new ideas.”

John McComb scholarship winner Ryan Krapf is a student in Recreation, Park and Tourism Management at Kent State University and has served internships with Cleveland Metroparks, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and the Buckeye Trail Association.  Originally from South Euclid, Ryan is a lover of the outdoors and believes that “we have our own set of experiences in Ohio and it is time to get the word out.”

The scholarship winners will be honored on February 2 at the OPRA Annual Awards of Excellence Dinner in Sandusky.

In addition to providing student and professional scholarships, the OPRA Foundation undertakes research, educates critical audiences and collaborates with allied partners to further the cause of public parks and recreation.
