Event Description

Eat Your Vegetables: Bringing New Light to This Age-Old Dinner Table Battle

Tuesday, January 29, 2019 @ 12:00 PM EST

Vegetable Consumption is a Necessity, Not Just Because Mom Said So.

There is a certain stigma attached to the phrase “Eat Your Vegetables.”

Many picture a nagging mother pleading with her children to eat their vegetables, but with good reason. It’s simply because the mother wants what’s best for her children, and with so much to gain from eating your vegetables, why would a mother ever give up.

Forty percent of households in Pennsylvania with less than $15,000 annual income are consuming vegetables less than one time per day. That is a surprising static when considering the health benefits associated with vegetable consumption.

Parents struggle with picky eaters all the time, so it can be challenging to continue to introduce vegetables at mealtime, especially if a parent is concerned about the “expensive” vegetables going to waste. This webinar will show you how to help families overcome the struggles with picky eaters and teach them how to introduce more vegetables into their diet.

Mary Ehret and Dori Owczarzak, Registered Dietitians with Penn State Extension, will not only share the proven techniques for overcoming push back for eating more vegetables, they will also cover the vegetable sub groups and the amount of vegetables to eat daily and weekly to lower risk for obesity, cancer and heart disease.

This presentation highlights information from the research-based, Totally Veggies program, which most recently transitioned into an online course.

Learning Objectives:

  • Inform participants of the health benefits of the target vegetables
  • Encourage family team formation to gain acceptance of more vegetables by children and adults
  • Encourage the use of low energy density vegetable dishes to help control weight
