Putting Lives Back Together: The Ramsey County Veterans Court Track and Working with Veterans in the Criminal Justice System

This session will discuss veterans in the criminal court context, from veteran-specific statutes and case law to the emergence of Veterans Treatment Courts and StandDown Courts as a response to the specific needs of veterans. The presenters will talk about the connection between military service and criminal court involvement, the importance of identifying veterans in your case load, and pointers for criminal justice professionals who may encounter veterans in their practice. Ramsey County will be starting a Veterans Court Track in December 2013 and presenters will provide an overview of this exciting new initiative. Participants will leave this presentation with an understanding of local and national efforts to respond to military veterans involved in the criminal justice system, as well as helpful tips and resources for those working with veteran clients.
