Description

Helping Unmarried Clients Navigate the Paternity and Child Support Process (live teleconference available)*

February 20

Presenters:
Kathleen Finnegan Lamey, Assistant Ramsey County Attorney; Autumn Nelson, Assistant Ramsey County Attorney; Melissa Rossow, Assistant Director, Human Services Division, Ramsey County Attorney’s Office

Census data suggests a rising trend of children born to unmarried parents, who either have an established trust relationship or may not even know each other. Because of this, it is becoming increasingly important for attorneys who practice in the area of family law to understand how to address issues that are unique to unmarried parents. These issues include adjudicating paternity through the courts or a Recognition of Parentage (ROP), vacating ROPs, genetic tests, establishing child support and past support, types of public assistance and what role it plays in the case, and county involvement in family law cases. Participants will leave with a basic understanding of paternity and child support, receive helpful checklists and handouts, and have an opportunity to ask questions of Assistant Ramsey County Attorneys who address these issues on a daily basis.
