Gender Bias in Domestic Assault Cases
As many criminal defense lawyers knows, a domestic abuse case travels a very different path depending on whether your client is male or female. For females, your case is much more likely to get dismissed. At the very least, the deal is sweeter right from the start (except in exceptional circumstances). This CLE will explore why this is the case, and how we, as attorneys, can begin to change the gender bias inherent in the domestic abuse system. How can we ensure that men are given the same benefits as our female clients? What strategies can we use to ensure men are not presumed guilty from the get-go?
