Event Description

Copyright in a Digital Age is an interactive course that will help participants understand and apply copyright law in both traditional and digital environments. The overarching goal is for participants to be confident in making decisions when copyright issues arise, particularly in the application of fair use.

Because librarians rely so heavily on fair use, a complex area of the law, a good portion of the course will be devoted to learning about and practicing application of fair use. In addition, we will cover the foundations of copyright law and will discuss specific topics including:

  • statutory exemptions applicable to libraries and educators, such as Section 108 exceptions for photocopying and archiving
  • commonly encountered situations, such as showing videos and creating multimedia content
  • copyright in cyberspace, including social media
  • digitization projects, and
  • use of materials in online instruction
