Understanding FRBR for RDA and Beyond (Live Online - 2 days)

Mar 04, 2014 02:00pm -
Mar 04, 2014 04:00pm

Event Description

This two-part course will be held on Tuesday-Wednesday, March 4-5, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Students must attend both sessions.

This four-hour live online class will give participants an understanding of the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) and how its concepts may influence online library catalogs.

This class, offered live online in two, two-hour sessions over two days will introduce and explore the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (or FRBR), a conceptual model of the “bibliographic universe.” Since the proposed next edition of the cataloging rules, Resource Description and Access (RDA), is based on FRBR’s ideas, knowledge of these ideas is necessary to understanding RDA. Aside from its relationship to RDA, FRBR has already influenced the display, navigation and use of bibliographic records in certain online catalogs.

By the end of the class, students will:

  • Have a basic knowledge of FRBR’s central concepts
  • Understand the FRBR group one entities (work, expression, manifestation, and item)
  • Know the structure of the FRBR model and its relationship to that of RDA
  • Grasp FRBR’s implications for how a library online catalog is organized.

Intended Audience: This class is designed for staff in cataloging and technical services, but may also be of interest to anyone concerned with how the online library catalog functions.

This class will be held in the Lyrasis Adobe Connect meeting room. Log-in information will be emailed approximately one week before the course.
