About this Session:
In advocating for comics in our libraries we often try to explain to stakeholders how comics are the same as other literature, in both value and content. But once we get beyond basic advocacy, the truth is we should be treating our comics collections differently than other books. Our comics are special collections. They require both visual and textual literacy to fully experience; they have a power to immediately connect readers with characters or biographical and autobiographical stories; and they allow readers to explore a huge array of fiction and non-fiction all from one section of your collection. This session will cover the value of keeping comics separate from general collections, but also how to market and advocate for that collection so it’s celebrated and not segregated.

Participants will learn:
– The value in organizing comics in their own section of the library
– Comics cataloguing best practices
– How to market and advocate for your comics collections

About the Presenter:
Lindsay Gibb is currently the Collection Development Librarian at OCAD University and Programming Coordinator of the Toronto Comic Arts Festival’s Librarian & Educator Day. She is a librarian and journalist with a major interest in the possibilities for comics and zines in academic libraries and who recently contributed a chapter to the forthcoming Library Juice Press title Comics and Critical Librarianship. She is also the author of National Treasure: Nicolas Cage, an award-winning reflection on Nicolas Cage’s acting style from ECW Press.
