January 27, 2016, 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM
University of Miami, Richter Library
This full day workshop will present participants with the principles of classification as defined by the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) system. It will cover the application of Cutter numbers and shelflisting, the Library of Congress filing rules, LCC internal and external tables, and the assignment of classification numbers based on the primary Library of Congress Subject Heading. Special attention will be given to classes H, N, and P. Instruction will include an overview of ClassificationWeb.net and will make use of the freely-available classification schedules and the Classification and Shelflisting Manual. Practice problems will be provided and follow-up discussion will occur in the three monthly webinars to follow the in-person session.
This workshop will be followed by a series of 3 live on line webinars. The webinars will provide participants the opportunity to work directly with the presenter on issues and problems of practical applications.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will recognize the differences in the freely available and subscription service for LCC, analyze a shelflist to construct a Cutter, construct LCC call numbers employing tables, and choose appropriate classification numbers.
