This two-part course will be held on Wednesday-Thursday, April 30-May 1, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Students must attend both sessions.
In this four-hour live online class (organized as two consecutive, 2-hour modules), an overview of Resource Description and Access (RDA) is presented, with a focus on its rules for deciding upon and structuring authorized access points in bibliographic records for library resources.
This class explores RDA’s basic guidelines for decisions on authorized access points in bibliographic records. We'll address what RDA specifies for creators, editors, translators and other people and corporate bodies with a role in the production of a resource, and discuss how RDA would have catalogers describe the relationships between and among resources and those responsible for them. Providing access to catalog records has always been of concern to us, and how we will do so under RDA will change in some ways. To assist you in the possible transition to RDA, we'll contrast RDA practices with those of AACR2 (the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed.).
Practice and readings may be provided for participants to complete on their own.
By the end of the class, students will be:
- Familiar with RDA’s rules for selecting authorized access points in records for books and certain non-print resources
- Comfortable with making decisions about access points and their structure, following RDA
- Aware of many of the distinctions between RDA and AACR2 structured access points
Note: RDA’s rules regarding serials will not be included in any depth in this class. The online RDA Toolkit will not be utilized in this class, which focuses on RDA’s content and not the functionality of the online tool.
Prerequisites:
The LYRASIS course Understanding FRBR for RDA and Beyond or knowledge of the FRBR bibliographic entities work, expression, manifestation and item is recommended, as are the LYRASIS courses Introducing RDA: 1, Structure, Principles and Core Elements and Introducing RDA: 2, Resource Description, or equivalent knowledge.
This class will be held in the Lyrasis Adobe Connect meeting room. Log-in information will be emailed approximately one week before the course.
