Event Description

Inclusion for Sexual and Gender Diversity in Libraries
6/6/2019
1:00pm -2:00pm

About this Session:
The UBC Faculty of Education has worked hard during the past 3 years to implement an ambitious campaign to raise awareness and enhance capacity, curricula and culture related to sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) inclusion for all students, faculty and staff. Our goal is to enable the greatest possible number of people to live their lives authentically. We are particularly focused on preparing educators who will, in turn, influence the lives and potential of countless numbers of young people.
Recent federal and provincial legislation protects the rights of sexually and gender diverse people, and considerable research supports the prevention of harms faced by this marginalized population, with intersections with other human rights (age, race, poverty, faith, ability, etc.). Why is this work necessary? Why now? Why should other sectors be on board? What are some of the highlights and cautions? Presenters will share some lessons learned so far, along with resources to educate and enlighten.

Questions explored in this webinar will include:
1. How has the UBC Faculty of Education catalyzed change in its language, practices and culture around SOGI-inclusion?
2. What are some ways that libraries can ensure that all patrons see themselves represented and welcomed?
3. Why does this work matter? What are some useful resources?
