Undergraduate Research Fundamentals: Empowering Students
Presenter: Toni Carter

Wednesday, January 5, 2022
2:30 pm - 4:00 pm EST

When faculty invite librarians into their classrooms to teach undergraduates how to conduct scholarly research, it often occurs as a one-shot, with learning outcomes such as focusing topics, searching library databases, or evaluating sources for authority. Librarians rarely have an opportunity to explore with students the infrastructure that powers scholarly research, also known as the scholarly research ecosystem.

In this workshop, information literacy instruction expert Toni Carter will explore how undergraduates would benefit from a deeper understanding of the ecosystem, what fits into the ecosystem, and strategies for advocating for more undergraduate instruction in this area. She will also share learning activities that will help students appreciate the complexity of the scholarly research ecosystem. This includes how campus units support scholarship, the language of scholarly research, and the ever-changing scholarly publishing landscape. You will leave this workshop equipped participants with ideas to use in the classroom and share with other faculty. These ideas will enhance undergraduates’ grasp of the world of scholarly research—and benefit your institution as a whole.

By participating in this workshop, you will:

  • Consider reasons why undergraduate researchers need familiarity with the scholarly research ecosystem
  • Identify components of the ecosystem that are critical for successful undergraduate research efforts
  • Strategize ways to help undergraduates learn more about these crucial components
