About This Session:

Studies show that "fake news" is hard for kids to spot - but the internet is where they live, research and socialize. This interesting and practical session will help you teach kids how to avoid fake news and find the good stuff online.

Learning Goals:

Following the presentation, participants will be able to help students: 
- Learn why fake news happens and why it's important to avoid it.
- Identify "fake news" and begin to investigate it. 
- Begin to gain critical thinking skills about what they read and watch online.
- Apply a number of practical tools regarding the identification of fake news.

About the Presenter:

Joyce Grant (Toronto) is a freelance journalist and children's author who holds a Master of Arts in Creative and Critical Writing from the University of Gloucestershire. Joyce Grant is co-founder of the popular website TeachingKidsNews.com, which provides free, kid-friendly news to teachers and students, as well as curriculum connections for each article.
