Creating Video Games in the Library

About This Session:

Creating video games can be an excellent way for librarians to connect with patrons and help them build digital skills. While it requires hard work and dedication, it’s also a skill that anyone can learn. This session will walk participants through the basics of Unreal Engine and Construct 3, two easy-to-use programs designed to aid the user in creating games. Unreal Engine is a free 3D software that lets you use premade models or import your own models to make a 3D scene (like a chair and a table) and program it to act any way you can imagine, like making the player pick up books and stack them on the table to complete the game. Construct 3 teaches the user the basics of coding, using visuals and text blocks to describe what action they can create. For example, the user could create a game in which the player needs to run through a busy library to find a special book.

-Awareness of useful and accessible tools for game creation

About The Presenter:

Kimberly Starkey is a Bibliotech senior student page at McLaughlin Library in Oshawa, Ontario. She graduated from Durham College in 2018 with an Advanced Degree in Game Development.
