A New Look for Florida's Historic News

Did you know that the  Florida Digital Newspaper Library has a whole new look? It's true!

Join us for a program to explore the new FDNL interface and learn about the extensive additions FDNL this year. This one hour presentation, offered by University of Florida librarians, will feature an overview of the  history of the FDNL and an overview of newly added papers from your region and across the state, 1870-1927; a tutorial on how to access these materials: searching, viewing results, saving images; and a question and answer session. Learn what's new with this valuable resource for librarians, teachers, historians, genealogists, and more. 

The Library Services and Technology Act grant (Old News, New Readers: Making Florida Newspaper collections accessible through digitization and training) enabled the digitization of these new materials and the creation of this training session.

 

Presented by:

April Hines is the journalism and mass communications librarian for the University of Florida (UF) George A. Smathers Libraries. Her research areas include library marketing and outreach and social media engagement. She has presented and published on such topics as academic librarians and personal branding and using ethnic newspapers to reach underserved communities. Hines has participated on several grant projects and is a co-author of the book Collaborating with Strangers: Facilitating Workshops in Libraries, Classes, and Nonprofits published by the American Library Association. 

 

Fletcher Durant is the Director of Conservation and Preservation for the University of Florida Libraries. Prior to joining UF, he was the Preservation Archivist for NYU Libraries and an Assistant Conservator for Special Collection at the New York Public Library. He received his MSIS and CAS in the Conservation of Library and Archival Materials from the University of Texas. His research interests are in sustainable preservation practices, collection assessment, and conservation decision making. 

 

Chelsea Dinsmore joined the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries in 2004 as a documents librarian. She currently serves as the Chair of Digital Support Services for the Libraries.  Currently involved in research to improve the accessibility of digital collections by rehabilitating legacy metadata, she also prioritizes converting legacy formats, like microfilm, to extend the research potential of and access to historically significant content. Ms. Dinsmore holds an MLIS from the University of Texas at Austin and an MA in History from the University of Florida.
