SWS New England 2017 Annual Chapter Meeting

May 05, 2017 08:30am -
May 06, 2017 05:00pm
(GMT-5)

Event Description

The New England Chapter of SWS presents its Annual Chapter Meeting and Field Trip. Our theme this year is “Wetland and Aquatic Restoration: Successes and Failures."

Field Trip Day (Friday May 5th): A field trip to look at the good, bad and ugly of wetland mitigation. In the morning we will visit a mitigation site that failed and after lunch we will visit other sites, discussing if the sites are better or worse and what are our measures of success.

If you’re interested in attending the water mitigation field trip only, please contact Kara Miller at kmiller@sws.org to register.

Conference Highlights (Saturday May 6th): Full-day conference including presentations on the previous day’s field trip, living shorelines, the Connecticut In-lieu Fee Program, the Maine Vernal Pool Special Area Management Plan, and wetland restoration in a changing climate. We will end the day with an optional short field trip right on campus to a wetland restoration project.

In 1998, a wetland was constructed on the campus of the University of New England to compensate for impacts to a wet meadow/scrub-shrub wetland when a new soccer field was built. The functions and values to be replaced by the created wetland included production export, wildlife habitat, education/scientific value and visual quality/aesthetics. After a brief review of the history of the project, we will visit the compensation site, which is considered to be a "success," and see what the project looks like almost 20 years after construction.
