How to Become an Appraiser

The Appraisal Foundation receives many inquiries from individuals for information on becoming a valuation professional. In response to these requests, we have developed two brochures (posted below): How to Enter the Appraisal Profession covers all disciplines of valuation including real estate, personal property and business valuation. How to Enter the Real Estate Appraisal Profession covers the discipline of real property appraisal specifically. We strongly encourage individuals interested in becoming a real estate appraiser to contact their state appraiser regulatory agencies (a list is provided below) for information on becoming a licensed/certified real property appraiser in their state.

How to Enter the Real Property Appraisal Profession
This publication is intended to provide basic information to individuals who are considering entering the real property appraisal profession. For specific information about the requirements in your state, please contact your state appraiser board

State Real Estate Appraiser Regulatory Boards
Each U.S. State or Territory has a State appraiser regulatory agency, which is responsible for certifying and licensing real estate appraisers and supervising their appraisal-related activities, as required by Federal law.
