Membership to the National Council for Geographic Education is available to individuals with discounts available for students, first-year teachers, retirees, and spouses.

Member benefits include:


  • Perspective is a newsletter with geography education news, opportunities, and resources for NCGE members. It is published 6 times per year.
  • The Journal of Geography (JOG) is the oldest journal in the United States dedicated to the teaching of a specific subject. This scholarly, peer-reviewed journal designed for educators offers the best in teaching and research advancements in geographic education. JOG publishes research on innovative approaches to teaching and learning, classroom tested lesson ideas, curriculum, book reviews, and more. The Journal, now in its 110th volume, is published 6 times per year.
  • The Geography Teacher provides short articles, lesson plans, teaching tips, and news especially relevant for today’s K-12 and pre-service teachers. This colorful and engaging journal is published twice a year.
  • Members will have access to current and archived issues of the Journal of Geography and The Geography Teacher.
  • NCGE also publishes several content-specific special publications. Members receive up to 30% savings on teaching resources in the NCGE store.


  • Members have access to downloadable lessons and teaching resources as well as resources for starting and maintaining elementary and middle school geography clubs.
  • NCGE’s newest teacher resource is a monthly webinar series. Content for the webinars ranges from preparing for the AP Human Geography exam to conducting field work in your school’s backyard. Webinars are free for members.


  • There are many leadership opportunities within the organization. Members can volunteer to consult on an NCGE project, be on task forces, committees, and run for elected positions on the Executive Planning Board. Elections occur every spring.
  • NCGE is proud to host the annual National Conference on Geography Education. At the conference educators learn about the latest research in Geography education, participate in exciting interactive sessions, network with colleagues who share the same passion for geography education, and leave with new teaching resources and innovative instructional approaches. Members receive up to a 30% savings on conference registration fees.


  • Membership in NCGE will ensure that you are kept up to date with the latest legislation and education policy developments. Members will also benefit from NCGE’s connection to other professional geography and educational organizations. Cross pollination of ideas and collaborative study opportunities are also available.
  • NCGE’s new Member Fuse networking site is also available to members who wish to connect to colleagues with similar research and teaching interests.


  • Coming soon in late 2011 is a ‘Careers in Geography Education’ page for members. This site will provide notifications of geography and geography education-related positions available in North America and abroad.
