Kearsarge Solar

maaps is pleased to announce an exciting new opportunity for members to reduce electricity costs and support clean, domestic renewable solar energy. maaps partner Kearsarge Solar, a Massachusetts-based renewable energy project developer, offers a solar energy cost-savings program with accompanying curriculum materials for your school. This new cost saving program is unique in that it requires no capital outlay at any stage. In addition, due to the current availability of Federal and Massachusetts incentives, Kearsarge offers significant energy cost savings and/or site lease payments to maaps schools.

Overview

Kearsarge Solar, a division of Kearsarge Energy, is actively pursuing solar energy project sites and host partners throughout the Northeast with a focus on working with private schools in Massachusetts.  Attractive sites include both open spaces (+3 acres) and larger rooftops (+40,000 sq. ft.).  As a result of certain Federal incentives and recent Massachusetts regulatory changes, Kearsarge is able to offer significant energy cost savings and/or site lease payments to project host schools.  No capital outlay is required from these partner schools.  Kearsarge provides a full-service turnkey solar solution, from feasibility analysis, through financing, construction, and ongoing maintenance and monitoring.  Solar energy projects offer host partners substantial economic benefits, tremendous educational potential, and outstanding green and community leadership value.

Host partners grant a site lease (rooftop or ground-mount) and enter into a 15-20 year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to buy all of the electricity generated by the system from Kearsarge at a discount to retail electricity rates.  Solar energy systems usually generate between 25-40% of host facilities’ annual electricity needs.  Kearsarge then builds, owns and operates the system until such time as the host partner agrees to purchase the system or the contract ends and the solar energy equipment is removed from the site.

Benefits to Partner Schools

  • Substantial immediate and long-term electricity cost savings for both retail electricity and competitive supply contract customers (PPA @ 10-25% off current electricity rates locked in for 15-20 years - final savings TBD by project size and prevailing electricity rates)
  • Environmental leadership, outstanding educational opportunities and positive community impact
  • Technology applications that do not penetrate rooftops or sensitive land - allowing for easy system removal after useful life (25+ years)

Site Criteria

  • +3 acres or open space or +40,000 square feet of available rooftop
  • Rooftops are in good repair (usually less than 8 years old)
  • South-facing exposure and no significant shade risks (trees, other buildings, etc.)
  • On-site energy usage may vary – there is no predetermined minimum level of electricity consumption required

Kearsarge Process

  1. Evaluation, Design, Financing & Construction - Kearsarge conducts an assessment of each prospective host’s energy needs and solar production potential.  Next, Kearsarge designs a solar PV system that utilizes proven technologies and materials to optimize solar energy production.  Kearsarge manages the entire construction process including logistics, incentive applications and the utility interconnection process.  All this is provided to system hosts at no cost as Kearsarge finances all project development and construction, and assumes project risk.
  2. Operations, Maintenance & Monitoring - Kearsarge has an experienced team of engineering and technical partners that will provide on-going maintenance of the system to ensure peak performance and meet all warranty requirements.  Kearsarge will work diligently to monitor production and ensure smooth system operation.  In addition, Kearsarge will manage all incentive programs and Solar Renewable Energy Certificate (SREC) certifications and transactions.
  3. Long-term Commitment - Kearsarge is compensated for the energy and SRECs generated by each solar installation, providing a long-term incentive to maintain maximum system efficiency and production and stay actively involved.  Host partners’ total energy costs are reduced by the greatest amount when the system produces the most energy.  Therefore, the interests of both Kearsarge and project hosts are aligned, creating a framework for highly profitable and highly sustainable relationships.
