Welcoming Remarks: Mike Mota, PhD, PE - CRSI Concept: A Feasability Design Tool for Reinforced Concrete Atlantic Region Manager, Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute
CRSI Concept is a simple to use feasibility design tool to determine material quantities such as rebar, concrete and formwork during the preliminary design process. Most conventional reinforced concrete floor systems are included. This demonstration of Concept's capabilities will discuss the flat plate, flat slab, wide-module, waffle slab, one-way beam-support slab and voided slab systems.
Presentation: Ed DePaola, PE - Practical Methods for Drift Optimization of Concrete Frames President & CEO, Severud Associates Consulting
This presentation is geared towards the practical application of optimization methods for practicing structural engineers. It covers a basic review of the engineering (the Method of Virtual Forces) and the mathematics (the Method of Lagrange Multipliers). Example problems for statically determinate braced frames are presented with hand calculations to explain the simplicity of the methods. The methods are expanded to included portal frames and combined braced and portal frames. The presentation continues with statically indeterminate braced frames, portal frames and combinations with an emphasis on computer methods.
The economy of a cast-in-place concrete structures depends in large part on decisions made early in design regarding simplicity and repetitiveness of formwork which can impact up to 60% of the in-place cost. Ease of reinforcing steel placement through proper detailing and mitigation of congestion further contributes to the overall economy of design.
Stakeholders who should attend this seminar include Architects, Structural Engineers, Building Officials, Contractors/Detailers and Owners.
