3/1/2014  Ralf Kohnen

Due to an unfortunate accident, we have lost an outstanding scientist, great friend and wonderful human being. He was a world expert in the research of diagnosis and evaluation of treatment efficacy of restless legs syndrome. His passing is a tragedy for all of us in the field, but his work will have a long-lasting impact on future research.  We will always remember him.

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden untimely death of Andrea Schenck, wife of Dr. Carlos Schenck, by accidental drowning on Friday, January 12, 2012 at the age of 55.

9/12/2010 Pasquale Monagna

With great sadness we note that professor Pasquale Montagna passed away on December 9, 2010 at the age of 60, after struggling against his disease.  He was both an eminent neurologist possessing an impressive knowledge and a distinguished teacher. He was one of the best scientists to emerge from the sleep center of Professor Elio Lugaresi, in Bologna, Italy. His contributions to new knowledge in the sleep medicine field were enormous. His publications on fundamental topics, including fatal familial insomnia, nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy, and restless leg syndrome provide landmarks for the future.  The remarkable personality of Pasquale Montagna will forever remain in the memory of his family, friends, colleagues and trainees.

10/22/2010 Helmut Schmidt

With great sadness we note that Helmut Schmidt, M.D., one of the great progenitors of sleep medicine, died on October 20, 2010. It is hard to think of sleep medicine without Dr. Schmidt.

9/15/2008 Wayne Hening

A gifted scholar and a kind, compassionate gentleman who "always thought outside the box.”   These words aptly describe Wayne Hening, MD, PhD. Wayne Alfred Hening was born on January 29, 1945 and died a premature death at the height of his career on September 15, 2008 at the age of 63 years after a brief but valiant struggle with pulmonary fibrosis and its complications.  The world of sleep medicine has lost one if its pioneers.
