Description

Social communication is a paramount life skill, which often requires significant guidance. Research continues to identify a growing need for effective interventions. Live clinical experiences, video examples, and written music therapy guides will deepen clinicians’ understanding of social communication deficits, and how to systematically use music to address complex skills such as initiation, comments, questions, perspective taking, and principles of social cognition. Learn how to design and implement effective music therapy strategies to address social communication functioning for the verbal child, teen or adult with an autism spectrum disorder. Video examples, live experiences, and written guides will be shared.

Learner Objectives:

1. The learner will be able to identify 5 verbal or nonverbal social communication skills. MT I. B. 3. a, b, c)

2.  The learner will identify 3 social communication behaviors or cues that they can use with their own clients. (CBMT II. A. 3. a, b, e)

3. The learner will list 3 appropriate declarative statements for use in coaching clients on improving social communication.   (CBMT II. A. 3. a, b, e)

4. The learner will identify 4 therapeutic music interventions they can use in their own clinical work in social communication. (CBMT II. A 2. p, ab, ag, ai, av)

Schedule:

1.     75-80 minutes:
- Present Social communication Neuroscience and Research findings
- Review of written clinical guides, data tracking forms, research applications

2.     ten-minute break

3.     75-80 minutes:
•      Present Social Communication skills through specific therapeutic music interventions demonstrating skills in:
- joint attention including initiation/response
- questions/answers
- conversational expansion
- perspective taking
- nonverbal areas of conversational effectiveness
Experiential opportunities and video demonstration leading Soc. Comm. interventions/discussion

4.     15 minutes:
- question and answer/discussion

5.  10 minutes: course evaluation
