PM06: Innovative Approaches for Engaging Patients and Improving Decision Making in the Era of Precis
(Event: SMDM 42nd Annual Meeting: Virtual Meeting)

Oct 13, 2020 1:00PM - Oct 13, 2020 4:00PM
Session Type: Short Course- PM 1/2 Day

Description
Background
As healthcare continues to undergo rapid transformation with the emergence of precision medicine (PM), AI and other associated technologies, the landscape of medical decision-making is poised to shift remarkably as well. We need new models and approaches in order to inform and assist all stakeholders. To implement PM, providers may need to rely on a combination of types of evidence and algorithms making it difficult to optimally select among different options. This complexity leads to decision challenges, such as a lack of how to properly evaluate health related quality of life. This course introduces participants to new patient-centric focused tools designed to better engage patients in the new era of precision medicine. We will also initiate a dialogue with participants on how to innovate and design better tools that will allow for improved relationships in medical decision making, particularly with measures taken in healthcare due to COVID19.
Course Type

Format Requirements
This highly interactive course will be taught using a combination of didactic, case studies and experiential learning (including a role- playing game) using the Zoom breakout room function (assuming that SMDM will allow Zoom or the SMDM-preferred online delivery platform). The experienced faculty will include explanations of theory and practical examples of how to develop new approaches and methods to investigate medical decision-making in increasingly complex healthcare. environments. There are no specific prerequisites for participation, however, a basic knowledge and understanding of medical decision making is assumed.
Description & Objectives
As healthcare continues to undergo rapid transformation with the emergence of precision medicine (PM), AI and other associated technologies, the landscape of medical decision-making is poised to shift dramatically. The benefits of PM will not be realized unless patients and physicians can easily use and understand the information generated by these novel technologies and applications. In this context, the science of medical decision-making needs new approaches in order to continue to inform and assist all stakeholders. This requires capturing personalized genomic information, patient preferences, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and the integration of decisions related to detection, diagnosis, and interventions. This course aligns with SMDM’s commitment to teach methods and approaches to improve decisions and the science of patient-centered shared decision- making, and directly supports the 2020 theme: Relationships in Medical Decision Making. The course faculty will lead participants in 2 engaging and interactive activities: (1) an online role playing game that demonstrates within the context of pediatric oncology settings how precision medicine and pharmacogenetics discussions can lead to better quality of life decisions for patients and families; and (2) an case presentation designed to prompt a dialogue about innovative approaches to measure and monitor decision making and how relationships are affected in the post-COVID19 era. The course objectives are to:
  • Understand PM and how it adds layers of complexity to decision making under uncertainty in different healthcare settings.
  • Understand why the value of PM or other new technologies must include patient preferences, family contextual considerations and other factors.
  • Learn about the process of developing new approaches and decision tools.
  • Understand how relationships in medical decision-making can be affected by new events and how to think about designing research studies and approaches.
