PM09: Developing Innovative Approaches for Engaging Patients and Improving Decision Making in the Er
(Event: SMDM 41st Annual Meeting: Portland, OR)

Oct 20, 2019 2:00PM - Oct 20, 2019 5:30PM
Session Type: Short Course- PM 1/2 Day

Description

Background
As healthcare continues to undergo rapid transformation with the emergence of precision medicine (PM), AI and other associated technologies, the landscape of medical decision making is poised to shift remarkably as well. Making sense of the bewildering array of options that new capabilities provide us with is and will continue to challenge providers, patients and other stakeholders. The science of decision-making needs new models and approaches in order to continue to inform and assist all stakeholders. For example, to implement PM, providers may need to rely on a combination of types of evidence and algorithms making it difficult to optimally select among different options. This complexity leads to decision challenges, such as a lack of how to properly evaluate health related quality of life (HRQOL) or contextual patient preferences. This course introduces participants to new patient-centric focused tools designed to better engage patients in the new era of precision medicine.
Course Type
Half Day
CourseLevel
Intermediate
Format Requirements
This highly interactive course will be taught using a combination of didactic, case studies and experiential learning (including a role- playing game). The experienced faculty will include explanations of theory and practical examples of how to develop new approaches and methods to investigate medical decision-making in increasingly complex healthcare environments. There are no specific prerequisites for participation, however, a basic knowledge and understanding of medical decision making is assumed.
Overview
This highly interactive course introduces participants to new patient-centric focused tools designed to better engage patients in the new era of precision medicine and is directly in alignment with the 2019 SMDM theme: Many Views on Value. It is offered at the Beginner to Intermediate level.
Description & Objectives
As healthcare continues to undergo rapid transformation with the emergence of precision medicine (PM), AI and other associated technologies, the landscape of medical decision-making is poised to shift dramatically as well. Scientific and technological innovations have led to increased life expectancy, improvements in outcomes and quality of life. At the same time, these novel technologies are increasing the complexity of medical decisions and leading to questions about how to measure the value of PM. The benefits of PM will not be realized unless patients and physicians can easily use and understand the information generated by these novel technologies and applications. The science of medical decision-making needs new models and approaches in order to continue to inform and assist all stakeholders particularly about how to assess value in this new era of PM. This requires the development of new approaches for capturing personalized genomic information, patient preferences, algorithms, health related quality of life (HRQoL) and the integration of decisions related to detection, diagnosis, and interventions. This course aligns with SMDM’s commitment to teach about methods and approaches to improve decisions and the science of patient-centered shared decision-making, and directly supports the 2019 theme: Many Views on Value. The course faculty have experience developing novel tools for different decision makers for the new era of precision medicine, and will be sharing their expertise and experience. The objectives are for participants to:
  • Understand precision medicine and how it adds layers of complexity to decision making under uncertainty in different healthcare settings.
  • Understand why the value of PM or other new technologies must include patient preferences, family contextual considerations and other factors.
  • Learn about the process of developing new approaches and decision tools to measuring value with the new technologies and emerging applications in healthcare.
