Panel: Addressing Inequity and Incorporating Identities into Medical Decision Making Research
(Event: SMDM 41st Annual Meeting: Portland, OR)

Oct 20, 2019 8:00PM - Oct 20, 2019 10:00PM
Session Type: Workshop

Description
Race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, disability. Aspects of identity impact the lived experience of patients, study participants, and researchers alike. Different dimensions of one’s identity may simultaneously confer advantage or disadvantage within the context of the doctor-patient relationship, a healthcare institution, or academic medicine. These social and cultural factors can influence communication, decision-making, and, ultimately, healthcare outcomes. To that end, consideration of the role of identity and inequity, and their impact on decision science research is needed at multiple levels, starting with the examination of our workforce. For instance, a lack of diversity in the recruitment of research faculty and staff can have numerous detrimental impacts on the quality of our science. A workforce that lacks diversity lacks the innovation and creativity generated by diverse experience and perspectives; may face challenges in recruiting a more diverse study population; and may, ultimately, fail to meet the needs of underrepresented populations in intervention design. This year’s event will focus on strategies to a) recruit more diverse and representative research faculty and staff and research study participants and b) develop interventions tailored to the experience and needs of diverse populations and stakeholders. Our panelists will discuss diversity in the context of gender, race, ethnicity, culture, nationality, sexuality, and faith. Additionally, we will address the cumulative challenges that can occur at the intersections—when multiple dimensions of one’s identity create overlapping and interdependent experiences of social disadvantage.
