N. Music Therapy in ACTion: Integrating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Into Your Practice

Description

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a new model of therapy that has demonstrated positive outcomes in populations including individuals with chronic pain, individuals with anxiety, and individuals with depression.  In this experiential and interactive intensive course, learn what ACT is, experience ACT interventions, and explore how to integrate ACT into your music therapy practice from assessment to implementation to evaluation.

Learning Objective #1: Participants will be able to identify the theoretical underpinning of, components of, and approach to acceptance and commitment therapy as a theoretical orientation (CBMT Domain III.A.3.a, c, e).

Learning Objective #2: Participants will be able identify at least one way in which acceptance and commitment therapy can inform music therapy assessment, music therapy treatment implementation, and music therapy evaluation (CBMT Domain II.B.9; II.C.3).

Learning Objective #3: Participants will identify or create at least one intervention that is acceptance and commitment therapy informed (CBMT Domain II.D.10; III.A.2).

Schedule:

  • 10 minutes— Pre-assessment
  • 5 minutes— Welcome and introduction
  • 10 minutes—History and theoretical underpinings of acceptance and commitment therapy as a theoretical orientation (CBMT Domain III.A.3.a, c, e)
  • 10 minutes—General overview (including concept of psychological flexibility) and introduction of hexaflex (CBMT Domain III.A.3.a, c, e)
  • 120 minutes total— Explanation and demonstration of components of hexaflex; utilizing components to inform music therapy (CBMT Domain III.A.3.a, c, e; CBMT Domain II.B.9; II.C.3)
  • Breakdown:

  • 10 minutes—Values in music therapy (CBMT Domain II.B.9; II.C.3)
  • 10 minutes—Cognitive defusion (CBMT Domain III.A.3.a, c, e)
  • 10 minutes—Cognitive defusion in music therapy (CBMT Domain II.B.9; II.C.3)
  • 10-minute break
