AM15: Advancing the Critical Appraisal of Methods to Measure Patient Preferences
(Event: SMDM 42nd Annual Meeting: Virtual Meeting)

Oct 20, 2020 9:00AM - Oct 20, 2020 12:00PM
Session Type: Short Course- AM 1/2 Day

Description

Background
The study of patient preferences aims to assess the relative desirability or acceptability of health states, interventions, or programs. Multiple methods are now used to assess patient preferences spanning qualitative and quantitative approaches, experimental and non-experimental methods, and relatively simple to relatively complex studies. There is a growing literature on the development, application, reporting and dissemination, and, most recently, on the use of patient preference data by decision makers in medicine. These approaches have focused on standardizing terminology, methods, and publishing practices, often taking a cook-book approach towards developing better instruments and publishing more complete and transparent papers. Most recently the US FDA has highlighted desirable guiding principles of preference studies, but certain elements of this framework remain difficult to operationalize and assess (e.g. relevance and the study of heterogeneity).

Format Requirements
This course will use lectures, case studies, and group discussion to engage participants in an active learning environment. A working knowledge of preference methods is required, but participants who have a broad understanding of the advantages and limitations of survey research, statistical analysis, and medical decision making will also benefit from participating. Case studies will be presented to illustrate how critical appraisal tools can be applied to assess preference instruments, individual preference studies, and broader literatures of preference research. Attendees will develop an awareness and understanding of the emerging tools for critical appraisal and contribute to this field through group discussion and activities.
Description & Objectives

The course will provide participants with a working knowledge of how to critically evaluate patient preference research, including its development, conduct, analysis, and reporting. We will highlight existing tools for use in the appraisal of preference research and identify emerging considerations for preference research quality. Case studies will illustrate how different critical appraisal tools/paradigms should be used to evaluate different levels of preference information, including preference instruments, preference research studies, and preference literatures. Discussion will consider potential methods and conceptual domains that may be important in establishing the reliability and validity of critical appraisal tools. Participants will apply principles they learn in the course through a hands on activity and group discussions.

By the end of this course participants will have an:

  1. Understanding of the different areas/stages in patient preference studies during which critical appraisal should be used
  2. Awareness of existing and forthcoming critical appraisal tools for use in evaluating the generation and application of patient preference information
  3. Understanding of challenges in applying critical appraisal that are unique to patient preference studies
